Primo’s Donuts

This is one of those days where you want a stereotypical cop breakfast: coffee and donuts. Donuts are everywhere in LA, and you can find them easily anywhere you go in the United States. There’s even spudnuts (potato donuts), cronuts (crossaint-donuts), and even Ube donuts (purple sweet potato donuts). I’ve yet to accomplish my dream of trying them all because, firstly, my 20 lb weight gain from eating pints of Ben & Jerry’s has taught me that life is all about moderation. Today, instead of fancy or crazy doughnuts, I’ve decided on the good old fashioned donuts from Primo’s Donuts.

Primo’s Donuts is a small shop along Sawtelle Boulevard, and it was my roommate who made me fall in love with this family donut shop. It’s exciting to know what will be in store (literally, excuse the pun).

“Look,” My roommate said, “the best time to get these donuts is right when they’re fresh outta the oven in the morning!”

And he always, always, advocates for the chocolate buttermilk donut, which I completely agree is as delicious as it sounds.

As you follow the smell of freshly fried donuts and pastries into the shop, there’s a fairly good selection. I like how the family business keeps their customers coming  back – it’s the simplicity of making a good donut. They don’t drown their doughnuts in colors and various kinds of fillings and sweeteners and such. Instead, each of these doughnuts have a light glaze on top or a filling in the middle, with only one kind of flavor on each donut.

There’s also a few selection of pastries for breakfast, such as the breakfast empanadas and scones. I should probably be more adventurous with donuts, but my absolute go-to, just like my roommate, are those chocolate buttermilk donuts.

When we walked  right into the store, our hearts stopped for a split second when we did not see our beloved chocolate buttermilk donuts. We asked if there was anymore chocolate buttermilk (they seemed to be very popular, and run out fast in the mornings). The lady behind the counter saw the look of relief on our faces when she told us there is a fresh batch coming out of the kitchen. These two lovely chocolate buttermilk were just glazed with chocolate: they were still oozy when it was handed over to us. Warm and with a faint light steam, these donuts are a chocolately heaven. Also, the buttermilk gives these doughnuts a dense yet fluffy texture.

As you bite into the donut, you first hit the lightly sweetened chocolate glaze. Then, your teeth sinks right down into the crunch of the outer layer of the donut. And then, the dense yet fluffy texture of buttermilk donut. What more could you ask for from a donut?

On a side note, their chorizo and egg empanada is pretty tasty. It is slightly expensive considering it is $2 for a small piece, and I felt that there is not enough chorizo filling. However, it is tasty overall.

If you ever want to get an early start on a summer day, go to Primo’s Donuts!

To be continued….my donut journey with this shop is not over.
