Mee & Greet

July 7th, 2019

My newest Asian fusion craving in West LA! The menu puts a western spin on the traditional dishes in Southeast Asia, and this is a very well done passion project. Meet and Greet brings back the nostalgic tastes I had in Singapore and Malaysia, and at the same time brings something new to the table (literally – excuse my pun). The Indonesian owner grew up in Singapore and Malaysia, and started this passion project a year ago with a Vietnamese chef.

Mad for Garlic

They have an open kitchen next to the bar, so the smell of fried garlic stirring in the wok fills the place as you wait for your food. The fried garlicky smell is from their dish Mad for Garlic. Highly, highly recommended. It’s a mouth watering Asian aglio olio. I have always loved aglio olio, and Mee and Greet takes it to the next level with chewy egg noodles.

Ma Jiang Chicken Noodle

The Ma Jiang Chicken Noodle was pretty good too, it has a light and creamy sesame sauce with a side of chili oil. And of course, the chewy egg noodles! The fresh scallions and cucumbers pairs well with the tender chicken slices. I like that they use Hainan chicken, because it makes the dish refreshing. For those who are not familiar with Hainan chicken, it is prepped by boiling the chicken and then plunging it into ice cold water. This firms up the chicken skin (it’s my favorite part – just as good as fried chicken skin). The chicken slices are served cool and this Ma Jiang Chicken Noodle is a perfect summer dish! The chili oil on the side gives it a light kick, although I wished it was spicier.

Prawn Mee

Their Prawn Mee is one of the more expensive menu items as it contains Tiger prawns in a light and rich seafood stock. Having lived in Asia before, it feels over priced but I gave it a try. The seafood stock is very aromatic, with the taste of nicely roasted prawn shells with a hint of heat. It’s great that it does not have the taste of over boiled prawn heads (which is the usual ingredient for prawn Mee stock).

Tau Yew Bak

The Tau Yew Bak is okay. It’s great if you especially love the fatty, fatty pork belly (which I do, haha). What’s disappointing is the portion size. For me personally, it’s a homemade dish that mom can whip up at home.

To be honest, I still can’t get enough of Mee and Greet. The other day I took to-go their Hainan Chicken Rice, Popcorn Chicken and Achar:

Clockwise from top left corner: Hainan Chicken Rice, Popcorn Chicken, Achar, chicken soup

The Hainan Chicken Rice is close to anything as Singapore’s! The shiny, greasy chicken infused rice with cold Hainan chicken and chili garlic sauce is delish together! I wish the chili garlic sauce have a stronger heat to it though (if you prefer mild spicy then this is perfect). The chicken soup that comes with the Hainan Chicken Rice is made from the poached Hainan Chicken with ginger and spring onions. So simple and light, but so good.

The Popcorn Chicken is to-die-for. It’s so light and crispy, with a touch of curry leaves. It comes with a slightly spicy, creamy aioli sauce that pairs well with the Popcorn Chicken. Definitely on my fried chicken bites list.

What was not up to my expectations is the Achar, which is just pickled jalapenos, cucumbers, radish and carrots at Mee and Greet. It is light and refreshing, but it does not have the spice paste or the spicy colors of the Achar I am traditionally familiar with in Southeast Asia.

I love how Mee and Greet puts a new spin on traditional Southeast Asian dishes. Most of the time it’s been a definite hit with me. The business owner of Mee and Greet also has a Japanese fusion burger joint called the Humble Potato, and I’m excited to try that for the next time round.
