Non Stop Sushi

Should you ever want to get a fill on good sushi, Non Stop Sushi in Santa Monica is a great go-to place. There is AYCE, which is actually a decent price considering how many rolls you are going to eat. A roll is about $12 or $13, and going for AYCE is a sure deal. Part of the AYCE are appetizers, handrolls, nigiri and such. For the appetizers, we ordered the Heart Attack (stuffed Jalapeno peppers), Calamari tempura and spicy chicken:

The Heart Attack is meaty  and has a slight crunch when you bite into it. It is not as spicy as you might think. I love the presentation of the drizzle of sauces on top and bits of cod roe. The calamari tempura is nicely crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside. I’m glad so, because many places overcook their fried calamari and it gets too tough. The spicy chicken was a no-go for me: it was tender but the sauce was not very spicy, and the chicken skin was soggy.

I also tried the surf clam, tako and mackerel nigiri. The surf clam (pictured furthest left) and tako (pictured middle) were a little tough and bland for my liking, but the mackerel nigiri is very fresh and has a great mouthfeel:

And now drum rolls…for the rolls:

(Pictured top to bottom) Shrimp tempura, Avenue of the Stars and Caterpillar Roll.

Shrimp tempura was fried well and the tail ends are delicious.

Avenue of the Stars was just like the shrimp tempura roll, but topped with tuna, avocado and salmon.

They are my favorites so far, and the rice is freshly made. Also, the rice doesn’t fall apart.

(Pictured left to right): Hot Night, Creamy Salmon Jungle and Dragon Roll.

Hot Night has spicy tuna and spicy mayo on top, and the shrimp tempura on the inside gives it a nice, meaty crunch.

Creamy Salmon Jungle has sesame mayo, salmon and friend onion on top which was delicious. Sadly, the cream cheese made the roll too rich and heavy.

The Dragon Roll has unagi, eel sauce and avocado on top, with crabmeat and avocado on the inside.

So what is the difference between Caterpillar Roll and Dragon Roll? They are the same thing, if you like your avocado on the outside then go for the Caterpillar Roll. If you like your eel on the outside then go for the Dragon Roll. I like both of them either way.

The second time I went there, I ordered fried salmon collar, vegetable tempura and calamari tempura.

The salmon collar was crispy and golden, and the fish was cooked just nice in the middle. Add a squeeze of lemon.

The calamari tempura was not as good as the first time I had it: it has a heavy taste of sesame oil. Also, the batter on the vegetable tempura was a little soft and too greasy. I think the oil was a little too cold before they put the tempura in.

For the nigiris (pictured left to right):

The mackerel nigiri was my favorite again, followed closely by the tamago nigiri.

The scallop nigiri was a little disappointing as I was expecting larger scallops that were cooked in a light unami sauce – these little scallops were little on flavor.

Eel was okay, it was more exciting to have it in a roll.
