Magpies Soft Serve

Despite being a cold, chilly winter day, my friend, Ben, and his wife, Kate, decided to take me to try Magpies ice cream. I mean soft serve. I kept calling Magpies ice cream while they both corrected me it’s soft serve. “What’s the difference?” I asked.

“Soft serve is lower fat than ice cream because it is air churned,” they replied.

When I got into their car, they were discussing which Magpie location they should go to, and whether they have the Valencia orange flavor. Then they decided both locations in LA won’t have Valencia orange because it’ll be out of season til March.

“Either way”, his wife exclaimed, “they’ll always have MY flavor, Corn Almond.”

As we got to the shop (we settled on one location, but then went on the wrong route and went to the other location instead) there was a small line of people getting their soft serve. There were family with small kids getting their orders as I decided on mine. These are today’s flavors:

Malted Milk Chocolate

              Churro

              Sweet Cream

              Red Velvet

              Corn Almond (of course)

              Cracker Jack

              Roasted Strawberry

              Chocolate Noir

Kate ordered the Corn Almond (which happened to be vegan) magic chocolate topping while Ben ordered Chocolate Noir with almonds:

While I decided to try the malted milk chocolate with graham streusel topping:

The soft serve was very smooth and goes well with the graham streusel. After taking a little nip at the other flavors, the corn almond was surprisingly the winner. It has the roasted, sweet corn yet malty taste, along with the almonds that gave it a slight texture. The waffle cone was fresh with the a nice, light crunch – slightly sweet but not overly.

Also, you don’t get the icky super-sweet aftertaste like you do with regular American ice cream – you don’t feel thirsty.

Like they say, the wife is always right!
