Hi, I’m Alyson. I grew up in Singapore and Malaysia for most of my childhood, and moved to Los Angeles in 2015. In my first year, I hated the traffic and chaos of Los Angeles. A year later, I fell in love with this amazing city and never want to leave. I love this city for its diversity, people, martial arts, and of course, food. Los Angeles has such a huge food scene, from Michelin-starred restaurants, to hole in the walls, food trucks and street stands, I just can’t get enough.
To be honest, I haven’t been to any Michelin-starred restaurants. I aspire to cross that off my bucket list one day. For now, with my budget I’m trying out places that don’t burn a hole in your wallet.
Good thing I love exercising too, especially martial arts. When I’m not eating, I’m in a martial arts class, such as Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Jeet Kune Do. Doing martial arts means I can eat and enjoy more food!
I enjoy all kinds of foods (I’m not a picky eater). The posts here are mostly from places I’ve eaten at, which I think are affordable and tasty. Most of all, I started this blog because I wanted to share what I experienced in LA and all the amazing people I met.
Thank you for reading, just sit tight and enjoy!
On a side note, there’ll be super random recipes and/or quotes on my blog. That’s from my brother who helps me with my blog, and has added his own posts which I think are hilarious. So please, those super random posts…don’t take them too seriously ;p
Note: He’s also added his own squiggly drawings around the site.
When I visit my family back home, I get fed so well by my mom. Here’s what I grew up eating:
Steamboat aka Hot Pot; Rice Congee with Coffee; Stir-fry, Salmon Curry and blanched Spinach; Hot and Sour Soup; Chicken Ginseng Noodle Soup; Spicy and Sour Fish-maw soup, with Soy-Sauce Braised Pork served with Rice and Sugar Snap Peas; Kolo Mee with Coffee, Steamed Cod and Stir-fry Kang Kong; Steamed Cod (topped with Ginger, Tomatoes and Scallions).
Some of you may be wondering what kind of foods these are. These are a mix of Malaysian and Chinese cooking. When home, I’ve always started my day with coffee and rice congee or Kolo Mee (Malaysian-style noodles). One of my favorite lunches is mom’s Chicken Ginseng Soup.
